Every year I submit artwork for the annual benefit "Postcards from the Edge" held at a prestigious art gallery in Chelsea, New York USA.
Postcards from the Edge is a selection of 6x4 postcards on sale to benefit Visual AIDS and includes renowned artists such as Ed Ruscha, Marilyn Winter, John Baldessari and Jeff Koons - most known for his $58.4 million balloon dog sculpture sale. I enjoy attending with my good friend Bill Feigenbaum - an Emmy-winning artist and an expert in 3D paintings, best known for his animated film Hugo the Hippo.
Each postcard sells for just $85 (donated to charity) and all works are displayed anonymously. The artist's name is revealed only after purchase so you can walk away with a masterpiece and hit the jackpot! It's an extreme popular 3-day gallery event with crowds waiting to get in.
My piece entitled "Mother's Broken Jewellery" was a piece I donated in 2015. It is a mosaic made of pieces I found in my mother's broken jewelry tin. My mother has had this broken jewellery tin for as long as I can remember - so it was nice to recycle and finally make use of these beautiful semi-precious stones, glass beads, pearls, mother of pearl and all sorts.
In 2014 I submitted the piece "Stormtroopers". Stormtroopers is made from debris I collected in the aftermath of Tyhpoon Haiyan/Yolanda, Philippines. These include stained glass, electrical parts and candlestick holders from Palo's roofless cathedral as well as contrasting wooden tiles and nails from Imelda Marcos' extravagant Santo Nino Shrine/guesthouse in Tacloban. I mounted all debris on food relief box cardboard and added the head of a toy stormtrooper I found in roadside rubble in Tacloban.
The piece represents the resilience of the Filipino people in the aftermath of the strongest storm to ever make landfall.
Postcards from the Edge is a superb and exciting event that raises thousands for Visual Aids. I hope to be attending for many years to come.
